Since 2001, the US TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has been scanning every piece of checked luggage on every flight and conducting physical searches since 2001. The security agents are authorised to break the locks or, in the case of TSA locks, to use the master key which only they have. This means that you can lock your suitcase using a numbered padlock without fear of it being damaged during checks.
