Since 2001, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been scanning every piece of checked baggage on every flight, and conducting manual searches. Security agents are authorized to break the locks or, in the case of TSA padlocks, to use the master key available only to them. This means you can lock your suitcase with a numbered padlock without fear of it being damaged during security checks.
